The Boys Town Society (BTS) is an Indian Government registered charity working with some of the country's poorest children giving around 2000 of them the chance of secondary education and further vocational training which their family circumstances would not otherwise permit. This opportunity enables them to escape the poverty that holds their parents and would undoubtedly ensnare them too. The Joe Homan Charity, based in Peterborough and bearing the name of the founder of BTS, raises the society's funds in this country. Park Grove Church has been sponsoring some of these desperately poor children for nearly 30 years: this year sponsoring 9 of them. Funds are raised by donations from the children of our Sunday Sparklers, adult members of the congregation, 5th Knaresborough Brownies who use our premises and by special fund raising events. Brief details and photographs of our 9 children follow..
A.Elamaran aged 13 and at Athoor Boys Town 7 year old M.Swetha is on the left and at Madurai Sevasham Girls Home (MSGH). P.Shanmugavalli is at the ISSGirls town near Dindigul.
P.Thenmozhi is just 18 and in her final year of a 3 year Diploma course in garment Technology. B.Vidhya is 17 and with 16 year old A.Panchupraba make up our trio of girls at the orphanage which has become in all senses our Madurai Sevashram girl's home.
These last three girls are included in what is known as the child labour protection scheme where they live at home and attend local schools. Their families are assisted financially so that instead of dropping out of school they continue right through their secondary education. They are fron left to right, R.Lakshmi from Vedathakulam village and R.Murugeswari and S.Murugeswari who are not related but both come from the same village of Sullerumbu.
