| On a warm May day the congregation arrived
to find the church well heated! The Rev Shirley Ludlow explained that whilst we may necessarily experience 'tongues of fire' it would seem that they had been here!! For today is the feast of Pentecost, which throughout many folk's younger days was called 'Whitsuntide', 'Whit Sunday' or earlier 'White Sunday'(from the practice of receiving new members into the church , on the day, the new members being all dressed in white). . The feast of Pentecost is, of course, from the Jewish calendar but the Bible tells us that it was on that day that the Disciples experienced a 'mighty rushing wind' and tongues of fire, after which they went out, as Apostles, into the streets and proclaimed Christ Jesus to many nations gathered in Jerusalem, each in their own tongue. So on this, the true birthday of the Christian Church we celebrated by singing 'Happy Birthday' and the children blew out the candles on the birthday Cake. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!! |
